Susanne,
Here at Brigham Young University, our finding aids database uses the level attributes as an advanced search criteria to allow users to limit their search results. The advanced search interface is available at http://findingaid.lib.byu.edu/advanced.php.
The other function of the level attribute in our display is as a criteria for allowing users to submit digitization requests. Our internal policy is to only do digitization work for collections that are processed to the file or item level, and the digitized materials are then linked from their descriptive equivalent. For collections that are not digitized, but are described to the file or item level, patrons are presented with a button to request a digital copy at the file or item level (e.g., http://findingaid.lib.byu.edu/viewItem/MSS%206206/) The visibility of the button is based on the level attribute value.
If you have any further questions, please let me know.
Sincerely,
Cory Nimer

Subject: Use of @LEVEL
Dear all,
EAD offers several values within the @LEVEL attribute in the <c> elements (class, series, subseries, file, item etc).
Do you know any search engine, portal or websites that uses these attributes / values for interesting or relevant search or display functions?
For any input I would be thankful.
Best regards
Susanne
