Dear Joshua,
I doubt if anyone has them all. When you look at the lists of the
broadcasts, there are simply too many of them. Zillions of them.
You can look at the Met annals books and make a list of all the Turandot
broadcasts since 1961. I think those broadcasts are probably all
findable. A number of them (particularly those with Nilsson and Corelli)
have been released on CD over the years. I haven't checked, but I think
only a handful of sopranos will have sung the role of Turandot at the Met
since 1961. The two who come readily to mind are of course Nilsson and
more recently, Welsh soprano Gwyneth Jones, who was a mighty Turandot, if
you could overlook some bad notes here and there. I believe Eleanor Ross
may also be in that list. There have to been two or three more of them, I
think, but I can't recall who they were right now.
Sutherland recorded it but never sang it on stage. Callas also recorded it
(not my favorite Callas recording, though it has its admirers), but also
did not sing it on stage after she gave up the role very early in her
career. Only a few excerpts survive of Callas' early live Turandot's, but
they are impressive. Eileen Farrell recorded Turandot's big aria, "In
questa reggia" very memorably (also Liu's two arias), in her Puccini aria
album but never sang Turandot on stage. Regrettably, although we have a
number of other recordings by the role's creator, Rosa Raisa (who
reportedly asked Puccini to put lots of high C's in it for her), she never
recorded any piece of Turandot. However, we have some wonderful
recordings, including live excerpts, by one of the best of all Turandot's,
Eva Turner, at Covent Garden with Giovanni Martinelli and Licia Albanese.
Gina Cigna and Inga Borkh both recorded the complete role but less
successfully than others. There is a Caballe recording of it somewhere,
probably best forgotten about. That can't be a complete list but hits a
lot of the highlights. If you can listen to SACD's, the
Nilsson/Tebaldi/Bjorling recording conducted by Leinsdorf is really
something in its SACD incarnation. Turn it up!
Best,
John Haley
