Apologies: This message is being distributed across multiple lists.
Greetings ladies and gentlemen!
It is with great pleasure that I am able to announce that the "Illinois Campus Media Census" project has come to a successful completion and we are thrilled to distribute the final report and data from the Census.
Inspired by Indiana University's groundbreaking 2008 study, the Census project has spanned over the course of three years and was an attempt to examine and collect data on the existence and preservational state of analog, time-based audiovisual collections across the entire UIUC campus.
In conjunction with the UIUC Center for Multimedia Excellence (CME) the study identified over 408,000 physical audiovisual assets in 101 campus units (a mere 13.75%), the majority of which represent obsolete or obsolescent "legacy" formats being stored in conditions detrimental to their long-term usability. As a result, the report makes multiple recommendations which revolve around prioritizing campus-wide planning for a sustainable infrastructure for the efficient, cost-effective preservation of valued media content.
The Census was an extremely challenging project and we are thrilled with the outcome and proud of the accomplishment. I think the recommendations and findings from the Census are going to go a long way in helping to secure a major portion of A/V materials for many years to come.
Below you will find a link to the final report, full data set and a few other items. Please feel free to distribute the report far and wide. I am happy to entertain any and all feedback and questions about any portion of this project.
