We have a new resource on the website of the Old-Time Herald magazine,
"Champion Records: Old-Time Playing and Singing." It features research by
Kinney Rorrer and T. Malcolm Rockwell about the shipping figures for
old-time music recordings on Champion Records, one of Starr Piano Company's
budget labels. Among other trends, it illustrates dramatically the effect
of the Great Depression on the early record industry, how individual
releases were shipped by the thousands before the Depression, but when hard
times set in, numbers often fell to around 100 or fewer, even for great
records. (For example, the Jimmy Johnson String Band's "Jennie Baker" /
"Shipping Port," Champion 16559 -- a wonderful recording -- only shipped
101 copies.) Additionally, there are some interesting labels and Champion
ephemera from Kinney's collection. Please check out the site, and spread
the word to other record lovers!
