Hi Greg:
The reason I recommended Steve Puntollilo is that I'm pretty sure he has a 1/4" 8-track head that he
can mount on his super-charged Ampex AG-440C. This would be a much better idea than trying to use a
sketchy-from-birth original machine from Tascam or Fostex.
Now, 8-track 1/2" was a resonable format and many the punk and new wave album started life in that
format. For my money, the cream of the crop of that format was the Tascam 48OB, which had that
industrial-strength last generation transport in the 1/2" format. I've searched for one of those to
convert into a 3-track/4-track machine, the heads feeding external electronics. The transport is
desireable because it is constant-tension and has gentle and reliable library-wind mode, plus
rolling guides and a cerarmic capstan.
