Two contemporary organists well worth hearing, both for their artistry and the technical quality of their recordings are Gunnar Idenstam of Sweden, who records for BIS, and Kalevi Kiviniemi of Finland, who records for Fuga. I don't know if Fuga has any distribution in the US, but you can buy directly from them. Idenstam has released a lot of very good folk and classical fusion efforts, and I can highly recommend this SACD by Kiviniemi: http://www.sa-cd.net/showtitle/6054.

More pipe organ news. I didn't mention yesterday because I had to ask the UMG folks if I could talk about an upcoming release.
Coming soon (summer or early fall) will be a new 10CD box of Marcel Dupre's complete Mercury and Philips recordings. The remastering is being funded by the good people at the Association des Amis de l'Art de Marcel Dupre:
The Mercury recordings are being remastered in high resolution from the original first-generation 3-track tapes, using the Plangent Process. This has worked wonders on the clarity and definition of the big organs in massive spaces (St. Thomas Church in NYC and St. Sulpice cathedral in Paris).
Dupre's playing is superb, and you will hear inner details and dynamics never heard on previous releases. The Philips recordings, made in 1965 at St. Ouen cathedral in Rouen, France have been cleaned up for improved clarity and detail. If you only heard these Mercury and Philips recordings on the old LPs, you will be pleasantly surprised at how much was actually captured on tape. The 5-volume Dupre at St. Sulpice series is akin to the Yankees playing at Yankee Stadium -- that organ was his "home" instrument and he knew its every nuance.
The 10th disc is a new remaster of the Dupre/Paray/Detroit Symphony recording of Saint-Seens'
"Organ" Symphony. This recording was always cited by the late Harry Pearson as one of his favorite "golden era" stereo recordings. The Plangent transfer combined with modern high-resolution mastering has improved clarity, stereophony and dynamics vs. previous releases. Paray's crisp pacing and the excellent playing by the Detroit woodwinds and brass, in particular, make this an outstanding rendering of this work. Modern entrants on "best" lists tend to be taken at a much slower pace, and the organs are often (but not always) overdubbed, recorded in a different space from the orchestra.
The Aeolian-Skinner organ heard on this recording, which was then brand new in the Ford Auditorium, was salvaged when the building was demolished in 2012. The latest news reports I could find online indicate that the organ was given to a local church, which was awaiting funding to install it.
