In the last 10 days or so someone (I forget who) posted a note about the
large private Mechanical Music museum in Pittsburgh - the Bayernhof Museum
-and someone asked if others might be interested in visiting it. After
looking at the website I thought it looked like a somewhat smaller version of
the Jasper San Fillipo collection which ARSC visited when we met in
Milwaukee. There wasn’t much info about the hours of tours and they are done by
appointment. Having peaked my interest – and not seeing an email contact
listed, I phone the museum and got a call back this afternoon. I wanted to share
what I learned after speaking with the curator.
By the time ARSC gets to Pittsburgh it will be “summer Hours” for them.
If they get enough reservations for particular day they will run a tour
during the week (they usually do the 2 -2.5 hour tour of the house and the
collection at 1o:30AM and 2:30 PM). The tour costs $10 pp. Only cash is
The museum is the residential neighborhood and because of this it is not
available by public transportation. You need a car.
Since the ARSC Conference program is so full – and the tour would mean
being away for 4 hours, I know I can’t go. But I was hoping to fly back late
on Sunday night or – better yet – stay over till Monday – if I can find a
room share. I also might possibly drive to Pittsburgh.
Anyway, the curator said that if there were enough people interested in a
tour, he would do one on Sunday for us – and we might be able to choose a
different time if 10:30 didn’t work. The minimum number for a tour would be
10 people and it would max at 12 people. Children are not “encouraged” and
the museum is not handicap accessible. (It’s a private museum).
For anyone who wants to see if there will be a tour Wednesday-Saturday
they can call the phone # on the website. Here is the website to see the
history and a description of this collection. http://www.bayernhofmuseum.com/
I thought I’d test the waters and see if any others are interested in
arranging a tour on late Sunday Morning. If you are, please email me at
[log in to unmask] (mailto:[log in to unmask]) within the next few days. Also
let me know if you will have a car. If we can’t get a minimum, I’ll drop
the idea. It just looks very unusual. (By the way the curator told me they
bought a Welte reproducing piano from the San Felipe Collection).
