As to the tone controls, I have no opinion other than if it works for
you and sounds good, they it's OK for you. I think formal archival
transfers would want a more rigorous approach which is why most of the
equalizers seem to have fixed settings (up to 12, and there are
different 12 on the two I've looked at).
