Hi Richard:
I have two Philips tapes on 5.75" and in hard plastic cassette-style boxes. The tape seems to be 1
mil thick, and there is about 32 minutes running time at 7.5IPS, so about 1200 feet. For 1.5 mil
tape, this would equate to about 900 feet, about 24 minutes. For 0.5 mil tape, about 1800 feet, 48
minutes.
Quick interwebs research indicates this reel size was somewhat common in the European home recording
world in the 60s, but never was common in the US. I think the US reel manufacturers standardized on
3", 5" and 7" plastic for 1/4" tapes, and 10" NAB flanges for hubs of various heights (tape sizes).
That said, Philips seems to have marketed 5.75" reels in these cassette-type cases for the
educational world in the US and Canada, under the Norelco and other brands.
