I looked up the new hard disk technology Shingled Magnetic Recording
(SMR) that you've been talking about in this usually very reliable German
magazine (

It allows the new 8TB disks at a good price, but it gets really slow on
sustained write access. Seagate says it is not suitable for NAS (network
attached storage), so I assume it's also not good for RAID, which means we
usually shouldn't use it in our typical audio storage setup.
