There are a few of outfits releasing CD-R (Hamburger Archiv für Gesangskunst, Forgotten Records, others???), and some labels in Korea releasing pressed CD's with notes of some minor folk-rock-blues (for example Rosalie Sorrels).
Europe and Japan labels both large and tiny have released some interesting material which American companies have no interest in (perhaps because too few Americans appreciate and support such releases).
There are companies such as DUST TO DIGITAL,
ARCHEOPHONE, and others (names not coming immediately to mind) releasing beautifully packaged
obscure early popular recordings.
  Despair Not!
  Best wishes, Thomas.

Ben, thanks for the Columbia article link. Very interesting history.

Is there any equivilent to this today -- a tiny label in a very niche genre essentially hand-making product? I bet there is a lot of material out there in the niches that, even if it's under copyright, has no viable enforcement behind it. Opportunities! The bigger question, are there niche markets for old sounds anymore?
