Hello,
You can download the HMV set of Liszt's Concerto pathétique, recorded by
Mark and Michael Hambourg on 22 March 1934, from CHARM:

En blanc et noir was recorded by Marcelle Ruff and Dominique Jeančs for
French Gramophone on 14 October 1929 and issued on W 1095 and W 1066. There
are copies of the second disc only in the British Library in London, shelf
marks 1CL0019982 and 1CL0019983, and in the Bibliothčque nationale de France
in Paris:

Mozart's K.448 was recorded by Jean Wiéner and Clément Doucet for Pathé on 7
July 1937, issued on PAT 94-95 in France, on Columbia DX 842-43 in Britain,
and in Columbia set X 106 in the USA. This was transferred to CD by the
French branch of EMI:

It was also recorded by Luboshutz and Nemenoff for Victor in the US, issued
in set M 724 (I don't have the date). I haven't looked for copies of that.
The Lhévinne recording was transferred by Ward Marston for Naxos:

One source states that another US recording of K.448 was made by Grace
Castagnetta and Milton Kaye, but this seems to be K.381. It was issued in
mid-1938 in Timely set 3-K (discs 1302 and 1303, later reissued by General).
There is a copy at the New York Public Library, call numbers *LRA 134
(album, with notes) and *LR 11292-11294 (separate discs). There is also a
set at the University of California, Santa Barbara, call number Special
Coll., Performing Arts Timely 3 K.
I'm not aware of a recording of Brahms's Op.34b before the 1950s; whereas
his Variations Op.56b were recorded for 78s by Whittemore and Lowe,
Luboshutz and Nemenoff, and Bartlett and Robertson, at least.
Best wishes,
Nick

Subject: [ARSCLIST] Early Two-Pianos Recordings
Dear Colleagues,
I forward a question of one of my colleagues in the Institute of Musicology
(Hungarian Academy of Sciences):
Dear All,
I am working on an article dealing with Bartók and Pásztory two pianos
carrier, and I would like to compare their recordings (unfortunately there
are very few of them, and mainly fragments) with ones made by such famous
piano-duos as Bartlett and Robertson or Joseph and Rosina Lhevinne, who
were their contemporaries. I am interested in the recordings of the
following composition:
Mozart, Sonata for two pianos KV 448
Debussy, En blanc et noir.
Brahms, Sonata for two pianos op. 34b
and Liszt, Concerto Pathetic
I found some examples on the YouTube, in the case of Mozart there is a
recording by Joseph and Rosina Lhevinne, 1939 (YouTube), Regarding Debussy,
I found three recordings from this area: Bartlett & Robinson, 1941, Gaby &
Robert Casadesus, 1954 Genenvičve Joy, Jaquelin Bonneau 1955. However, I’d
like to find something which was made earlier then 1950s. As for Brahms and
Liszt, unfortunately, I did not find anything which was recorded about that
time.
I would be grateful for any information.
With Best Wishes,
Virág Büky
If you can help in her research with any information, please write to
