Librarian II / Specialist II position -- Moving Image & Recorded Sound

Overview:
The New York Public Library’s Schomburg Center for Research in Black
Culture Moving Image and Recorded Sound Division seeks a dynamic individual
to enhance the use of its world class archival holdings and to serve as a
resource and facilitator for public service access.
The Moving Image and Recorded Sound (MIRS) Division collects and preserves
audio and moving image (AMI) material related to the global black
experience. The Division is central to the NYPL’s and Schomburg
Center’s mission
to advance knowledge and inspire lifelong learning by the strength of its
collections but also by the compelling nature of AMI materials, which
literally give movement and voice to the major historical, artistic
and cultural
moments of the Twentieth Century.
Principal Responsibilities:
Reporting to the Curator of Moving Image and Recorded Sound, the Librarian
II/specialist II:
- Provides on-site and remote reference services, using print and
electronic resources
- Provides in-depth research assistance to users through one-on-one
consultations
- Creates finding aids and other collection management tools
- Organizes and inventories collections
- Coordinates the movement and storage of collections
- Manages reformatting requests
- Collects and posts monthly reference and collection-use statistics
- Collaborates to ensure the proper care and preservation of the
collections
- Creates collection subject guides for the MIRS division and in
collaboration with other Schomburg Center
- public service divisions
- Supervises interns and Page staff
- Supports the Schomburg Center’s public service policies and
procedures, collection development strategies,
- and special projects
- Performs related duties as required
Key Competencies:

Minimum Qualifications:
- Master’s degree from an ALA accredited institution in Library and
Information Science, or a Master’s degree in Audio/Visual Archiving or a
related field
- Minimum of 2 years of professional employment in a research setting,
such as a library or university, or a large Audio/Visual archive
- Demonstrated knowledge of archival processing, description/metadata
and digitization
- Demonstrated knowledge of A/V technologies and formats
Familiarity with Library of Congress subject headings, archival
description (DACS) and cataloging (RDA and MARC 21)
- Demonstrated ability to work effectively with the general public,
educators and students, advanced scholars, independent researchers as well
as with a wide variety of staff
- Excellent organizational skills
- Excellent interpersonal, collaborative, and oral and written
communication skills
- Demonstrated commitment to professional development
- Ability to manage multiple priorities
- Ability to be a team player
Preferred Qualifications :
- Substantial knowledge of black history and culture related to moving
image and/or recorded sound
Physical Duties:
- Possesses the ability to perform physical requirements including
retrieving and moving material weighing up to 40 pounds
