Ferenc,
Your correspondent may well know that Bartók recorded the "Concerto
pathétique" with Erno von Dohnányi in 1939. It was transcribed onto an
X-Ray foil pan from a
radio broadcast given the very night that Bartók fled from Budapest for the
last time. It is complete except for about 19 seconds missing from the end.
It is included on "Bartók Recordings Located in Archives" i.e.
http://www.worldcat.org/title/bartok-hangarchivum-bartok-record-archives/oclc/8946725
And this may be very well the recording you are referring to in the initial
letter, as I don't know of a "Concerto pathétique" with Ditta
Pastóry-Bartók.
best of luck with your project,
David N. Lewis
