Agreed, 78s were originally played with steel needles, but the accepted
approach for fifty years or more has been to use a modern pickup with the
appropriate tip size to trace the groove. Playing with original kit merely
destroys the artifact.

I am not sure. I know that for the Victrola records I would need a steel
needle and I was unsure if anyone made a cartridge that would fit onto a
regular turntable arm that would accommodate that type of needle. This is
why I was under the impression that I needed to replace the arm as well as
the needle.
