Dear Rainer,
If you have a week, you may wish to visit what survives of the old Gennett
building in Richmond, in far eastern Indiana.

Vincennes, IN is one of the sites of military battles that caused the
British to withdraw from the so-called Northwest Territories (modern states
of Minnesota, Wisconsin, Illinois, Indiana and Michigan). If you have the
time, an interesting side journey is Galena, Illinois, a small town that in
steamboat days was predicted to overtake Chicago. It is also the birthplace
of Ulysses S. Grant, and functions as a museum of antebellum architecture,
as the town never grew after c1850, when the railroad had sealed its fate
forever. When you're in Chicago, have a Vienna Hot Dog. Whatever your final
itinerary, have a happy time exploring.
Ciao,
DDR
