For what it's worth, pertinent to this conversation, I talked a while back with the technical guys
at Glyph, which makes high-reliability hard drive enclosures for audio/video applications. They told
me a key thing for drive reliability is the power supply in the enclosure/NAS device and also
running the unit on reliable power, preferably from a server-grade voltage-control system. They said
the power spikes are really bad for hard drives, as are low-voltage conditions (which cause heat
problems and can blow up cheapo capacitors that are being over-stressed in a high current
situation). They told me, to be double-dead sure, run studio hard drives and computers through a
voltage-control system and also with a high-quality battery backup/filter. In my experience, this
has worked well, in the case of all my hard drives and computers. But drives fail all the time, so
lots of redundancy is the key to everything.
Could someone explain why a somewhat antiquated magnetic tape-based storage system is preferable to
several copies across several hard drives? I just can't see any sense in using tape systems anymore
for data security, but I'm not a computer-storage expert, just a guy who stores a lot of data.
