This is a reason why I always very carefully study records I buy in used-vinyl stores. A lot of
times, the records come from massive collections bought in bulk from the heirs of a dead hoarder.
There are a couple of stores where they have albums laid out on shelves instead of bins, which makes
it easy to pick all copies of a particular title. I then mix and match best vinyl with best sleeve.
I learned this trick from an old decades-running collector. That store in Pittsburgh with the R.
Crumb T-shirts was a prime example of having to look at every detail of every platter and sleeve,
carefully, before buying. They had masses of dreck mixed in with a few nuggets. A contrast to that
is the store I visit occasionally in CT, where the guy is strict about only putting excellent to
mint platters in the bins, and everything else in the $1 and $5 piles. I know to avoid those piles
in that store, and know that I can count on the quality of whatever I buy out of the bins. In
general, the only reason I'd buy a dollar-bin record is if the cover is irresistable. I'm a sucker
for great cover art.
The guy with the piles of Beatles records with the leaky roof and sagging ceiling may live long
enough to see the entire pile of vinyl rendered worthless. But, the act of self-generated collapse
that causes that, may kill him.
