Job Description
The Southern Folklife Collection of the Wilson Special Collections Library at the University of North Carolina at Chapel Hill seeks a qualified Preservation Audio Engineer to assist with digitization of unique historical audio-cassette recordings from the McCabe’s Collection. This position is a full-time, four month grant position funded by The Grammy Foundation. Under the direction of the Curator of the Southern Folklife Collection, the technician will be responsible for equipment setup, playback, and digitization of unique historical audio cassette recordings according to international standards IASA TC05, create technical metadata relating to the digital audio files, assess and quality check digital transfers and related metadata, manage digital files held on networked storage, log digitization work carried out and provide progress reports.
Minimum Education and Experience Requirements:
Associate’s degree in electronics; or equivalent combination of training and experience. All degrees must be received from appropriately accredited institutions. Strong communication and organizational skills are required.
Preferred Qualifications:
Candidates will have a relevant degree-level qualification or 2 years of experience in a professional audio archive, be able to demonstrate a thorough understanding of and familiarity with audio recording, playback and transfer technologies, and have an in-depth knowledge of both obsolete sound carriers and contemporary digital audio formats.
Applicants will have proven experience in using digital audio workstations, creating metadata relating to digital audio resources, strong IT skills and an ability to assess the quality of audio recordings by listening.”
