Further information from IU from Jon Dunn, Assistant Dean for Library Technologies:

For online streaming access, with both Variations and Avalon, we have taken the approach of storing time-based structural metadata external to the delivery files, typically as XML. This is for two reasons: 1) streaming players/servers cannot typically make use of embedded marker information, and 2) it's much easier for collection managers to maintain and update. The Variations and Avalon streaming players both use this structural metadata to provide users the ability to navigate to specific cue points.

With Variations, when a master .wav file containing cue points is ingested, the system can parse the cue points and labels from the .wav file and use that information to initially populate the structural metadata record. This capability is on the roadmap for Avalon but not yet implemented.

Another feature that I think we'll eventually need, but have not yet implemented, is being able to export .wav or MPEG-4 AAC files and auto-embed the Avalon structural metadata as cue points and labels.

I'd like to put this question out to institutions providing streaming of

audio collections: How does your institution deal with inserting markers/cue

points into files derived from your archival masters?


For example, longer files containing interviews or orchestral performances need

marker/cue points for end user navigation.



Has anyone found a reliable way of inserting these markers into the BWF header

and having them propagate to derivative files?


What delivery player do you use that will then read these markers?



Any and all information from institutions who have this function in place will be

gratefully received.
