A modest offering to this discussion:
As a list subscriber for about 5 years (and an ARSC member for the same),
but neither a librarian/archivist nor a collector, the list has been an
invaluable way to learn about things that I knew I wanted to know. And, just
as importantly, things I didn't know I wanted to know. Even some aspects of
library practices, gleaned from discussions, have informed my own work, or
my understanding of the public libraries that play such an important role in
my life. Yet, given the info overload that can haunt us on-line, I'm not
likely to monitor another, more specialized, list.
The creation of the LIB list is a done deal and is in response to a
professed need. So be it. While some of us may rightly wave a flag for
inclusiveness, we should also take care that the discussions on the LIST are
carried out in that spirit. The discourse is usually polite, at least, but
we may not really understand how everyone perceives its general character.
Lou makes a very good point regarding usability. I've had to remind myself
of the purpose of the list, and guard against using it for idle BS-ing,
self-aggrandizement, or demonstrating my age or ignorance. In my case, it's
easy to shut up and listen - in this crowd there's much more to learn than
to teach.
The list is what we make of it. If some have found it to be less than
welcoming, that may be valuable market research that we can collectively
take to heart. As many of us are musical, we should remember the importance
of tone, pitch, and harmony.
Consonantly yours,
Carl

Discussion List
One problem with that, Maddie, is how far the contents drift from the
subject line. It can go off to a far tangent in just a few messages! I end
up reading every message but I often delete a few lines in.
I wish people would change the subject line to reflect the contents a bit
more conscientiously!

audiophile, I'm not a technophile, and I'm still relatively new to academic
music librarianship. I'm a musician, a music educator, and even a small-time
musicologist. I find everything that goes up on this list interesting on
some level. I don't follow every thread or read every post. I scan the
subject lines and read what I want to. I've been introduced to all kinds of
new concepts and practices in every area--stuff I would never have been
exposed to elsewhere. As a music generalist fascinated with the realm of
recorded sound, I've benefited a great deal from the single list format.
