Hello Frank,
  Thank you for this information.
The information I am seeking relates to GENEVIEVE WARNER - an article about her indicates she had a radio show on WGY when she was
12 - that would be 1937. I'd like to know when (day/s, time slot, duration) the show was scheduled, and if available, what
material she was singing. I'm located in the Boston suburbs, so getting to Schenectady is unlikely.
I will e-mail Chris Hunter and see what he can unearth. If that doesn't pan-out, perhaps you would be able to find some
information. Thanks greatly!
BTW - my interest in Warner stems from a lovely album she did for Columbia of Mozart and Schubert songs - further investigation
reveals she sang at the MET from 1950-54, and in Germany from 1955 to late in the decade - at least 1955-56 at Gelsenkirchen, other
houses, but no details.
After that she married, and retired. Bit of a mystery about the retirement - her obit (2001) says that her voice was damaged
in a 1951 mugging which occurred in Edinburgh on her way home to her hotel - she was singing with the Glyndebourne company.
The fact that she continued her career for at least a half dozen years seems to contradict that reason. Other speculation
is that the attack was severely traumatic which took its toll over the years, or that her career was not going where she wanted.
Could be combination of all these. It would be very enlightening to know what roles she performed in Germany, and what
the critics had to say. I'm also very curious about what she did in the 40 years after retiring!
If anyone has access to German newspapers, or European music magazines, perhaps you would see if there are any reviews,
or listings of her performances. Thanks!
  Best wishes,
  Sincerely, Thomas.

Hi Thomas-The newspaper of record for Schenectady at present is the Gazette. (Daily and Sunday) They were in publication during the 30's. The other newspaper that would have been there has long been out of publication. I think that it is not possible to search the Gazette on line as far back as the 30's. I know that the Schenectady County Library has old issues of both the Gazette and the other paper on microfilm as far back as the 30's. The newspaper in Albany is the Times Union. I don't think they are searchable back to the 30's either; microfilm may be available at the Albany County Library. Unfortunately the Schenectady Museum came on hard times and has morphed into the Museum of Innovation and Science (miSci).
You can Google miSci and you will find that they are still using the old web address, schenectadymuseum.org. They claim to have a lot of GE historical material, but you will need to go there to get it. The archivist is named Chris Hunter and you can reach him at [log in to unmask] He might be able to respond to an email, with information about/from their holdings. I live across the river from Schenectady, and would be happy to run over to the library or to miSci to look for something in particular.
There are a lot of Portlands, and Washingtons, and New Citys, but there is only one Schenectady.
