The NAR for the artist and sculptor Christopher Wilmarth is OCLC ARN #
823366 , lccn n 82127062. The authorized access point is "Wilmarth,
Christopher," which looks to be fine, as there is apparently no
conflict. My question is this: Why is there a variant access point (see
reference, in the old terminology) from the exact same thing, with the
addition of birth and death dates: "Wilmarth, Christopher, 1943-1987"?
This is an AACR 2 record, created in 1982 and last updated in 2009. The
reference was added in 1987.
ULAN/Union List of Artist Names has "Wilmarth, Christopher Mallory
(American sculptor, 1943-1987)," which is one of five variant forms
(with and without the dates and the unused second forename) found in
VIAF ID # 7430864. Oddly, there is another ULAN record (VIAF ID #
95800310) for a "Wilmarth, Christopher (American artist, born 1900)." I
believe this record to be a "ghost," as I find no evidence of this
person's existence in other reference sources.
If I want to upgrade the NAR to RDA, do I keep the reference or drop it?
I would of course add an 046 field.
