Indeed. RDA has a lot of obscure provisions, but this is a not uncommon situation. That said, I think the preferred name would be based on the name as found in the preferred sources of information, without unnecessary manipulation.

Given the prevalence of nicknames--to a lesser or greater degree--a clause added to RDA's own text might be worth considering instead.
