I have used Izotope's Dereverb feature, and it works great, at least some
of the time. It is deceptively easy to use. I believe how it works is
measuring the strength and timing of first, second, third, etc.
reverberations occurring naturally in the performing space, or as added by
fake reverb, as the sound bounces back to the recording mic. It can cancel
some of that out. Like many things, it works the best on sources that need
it the least, and if used too aggressively, it creates unacceptable
artifacts, basically crapping out the sound. It can also dry up the sound
too much if overapplied. So it requires some discretion and
experimentation. But it has proved extremely useful in lessening bad
reverb or echo, helping to clarify recordings that are awash in echo or
reverb. It works on mono recordings just as well as stereo.
Best,
John Haley
