For those of you who might be interested in researching musicians with Pittsburgh connections, the Friends of the Music Library of the Carnegie Library of Pittsburgh is offering $1000 research fellowships.
Many of you know about many of the jazz legends from Pittsburgh and I know ARSC members have written books or done ARSC conference presentations already about Billy Eckstine, Roy Eldridge, David Izenzon, and Billy May, for example. I would love to see someone write a book about Ray Brown, Ahmad Jamal, Stanley Turrentine, or Maxine Sullivan, just to name a few. http://www.fmlpittsburgh.org/pittsburgh-jazz-musicians

Pittsburgh orchestra conductors have included the likes of Victor Herbert, Fritz Reiner, William Steinberg, and Lorin Maazel. And there is the great tradition of Eastern European music here: tamburitzans, polka, etc. And lots of music made for local sports teams too. Go Steelers.
See this page for an overview of the oral histories, clippings files, concert programs, correspondence, scrapbooks, and other archival materials that might useful in your potential research:
