The Outreach Committee of the Association for Recorded Sound Collections
(ARSC) posts the following message.

--- 2017 ARSC CONFERENCE: SAN ANTONIO, TEXAS ---

Please join us for the 51st annual ARSC conference, May 10-13, 2017, at the
Menger Hotel, in San Antonio, Texas. The hotel is situated next to the Alamo
Mission, better known as the site of the 1836 Battle of the Alamo. Founded
in 1859, the Menger is listed on the National Register of Historic Places.

Besides the Alamo, other sights include the Battle for Texas: The
Experience, the Spanish Governor's Palace, and El Mercado. For a change of
pace, try a San Antonio river cruise or a bike tour of the city. Be sure to
explore some of the local record shops!

Two Pre-Conference Workshops, the "Analog Tape Playback Workshop" and the
"Digital Audio Restoration Workshop," will be held on May 10.

A block of rooms has been reserved at special rates for ARSC conference
attendees. ARSC's contracted dates extend from Tuesday, May 9 through
Saturday, May 13, with Sunday departure. The group rate is honored three
days before and three days after the conference, pending availability. If
you wish to reserve rooms outside of the Tuesday - Saturday room block, you
will need to make your reservation by telephone. The deadline to make
reservations at the ARSC group rate is April 17. Reservations made after
this date, or after our room block is filled, will be on a space available
basis at the prevailing rate.

all genres of music and speech, in all formats, and from all periods.
Reflecting this broad mission, the upcoming conference offers talks and
sessions that will appeal to both professionals and collectors.

Times," "The Engineering and Economics of DJ Screw," "Layers of Meaning and
Loss in UGK's 'One Day,'" "Celebrating Mexican-American Music in Texas," and
"Changing the Tune: Women, Leadership, and Recorded Sound."

Session topics include:

-- Preserving Expertise and Grooved Discs
-- The Texas Scene
-- Digitization Workflows
-- Texas Radio and Beyond
-- Of Records Made . . . and Not Made?
-- National Recording Histories
-- A Survey of Surveys
-- Texas Personalities
-- Collectors, Collections, and Metadata
-- Labels and Record Makers
-- Audio Engineering and Technology
-- Religion on Record
-- Philosophy and Sound
-- Radio Preservation
-- Contracts and Copyright
-- Collaborative Efforts
-- Pop Music and Its Makers
-- Barn Dances, Blues, and Fiddle Tunes

New this year -- poster presentations! ARSC is pleased to introduce poster
presentations to the conference program. Posters will be displayed all day
Friday. The poster session will be held Friday afternoon from 3 p.m. to 4
p.m.

Of course, there will be conference "extras." On Wednesday, wear your
comfortable shoes for the optional ARSC Walking Tour, "Robert Johnson in San
Antonio, 1936." Myths and mythology about the most famous of the Mississippi
Delta bluesmen only increase with time. Join Margaret Moser, music
journalist and founder of the South Texas Museum of Popular Culture, for a
discussion of Johnson's recording activities in San Antonio. An additional
fee applies for this tour, and will be collected on site. The tour is
limited to 20 participants. For more information:

On Thursday evening, relax and enjoy some films ("Music Rarities on Screen
from Celluloid Improvisations") or bring your questions for the "Ask the
Technical Committee" session.

On Friday evening, don't forget the screening of "Sir Doug and the Genuine
Texas Cosmic Groove." It will be followed by a Q&A with director Joe Nick
Patoski. Or, join a meeting on discography, followed by the Collectors'
Roundtable. For this year's annual Friday-night roundtable, participants are
invited to bring a crate of records they would like to sell or trade, and/or
a record or two for show and tell.

PRE-CONFERENCE WORKSHOPS

This year, there will be two workshops on May 10, at the Menger Hotel.

The "Analog Tape Playback Workshop," sponsored by the ARSC Technical
Committee, is designed to familiarize attendees with best practices
regarding audiotape handling, identification, and playback. The workshop
will be held from 9 a.m. to noon, and is limited to 20 attendees
(pre-registration required).

The "Digital Audio Restoration Workshop," sponsored by the ARSC Education &
Training Committee, will focus on the basics of audio restoration and repair
using Izotope RX. The workshop will be divided into two parts. The first
hour will cover basic theory, concepts, and tools used for audio
restoration. The remaining 90 minutes will focus on practical application of
audio restoration and repair. This workshop will be held from 1 p.m.to 5
p.m., and is limited to 50 attendees. On-site registration is allowed, space
permitting.

NEWCOMER ORIENTATION and MENTORING PROGRAM ARSC invites first-time
conference attendees and conference veterans to participate in the
Conference Mentoring Program. The program pairs newcomers with long-time
members, based on their shared interests. Mentors provide mentees with an
orientation to the conference, the association, and its participants in
informal meetings over the course of the conference.

Please note: Only ARSC veterans who are committed to the mentoring program
should volunteer. Mentors and mentees must be able to attend the newcomer
orientation and welcoming gathering on May 10, at the Menger Hotel.

and 2017 Lifetime Achievement and Distinguished Service Awards will be
honored. Finalists for the 2017 Awards for Excellence will be announced.

The Association for Recorded Sound Collections is a nonprofit organization
dedicated to the preservation and study of sound recordings -- in all genres
of music and speech, in all formats, and from all periods. ARSC is unique in
bringing together private individuals and institutional professionals --
everyone with a serious interest in recorded sound.
