Hello all --
We have 6 staff members, down from 13 a few years ago. I think an organizational chart is very useful but it has its limits - especially for those with a small staff. I was recently faced with the limits of an org chart when I was asked for one and I realized it revealed nothing about what we actually do.
So, I created an activity/function chart instead. It still can be used as an org chart -- I can plug in our staff positions. But it really goes much farther to illustrate (to people who don't know better) all the work we do at Aiso Library.
In the chart I identified 5 broad service areas:
Patron Services
Outreach & Resource Services
Systems Services
Acquisitions Services
Cataloging & Access Services.
I'm happy to send out the chart to anyone who wants. It's still a work in progress.

It was all I could do to not laugh myself out of my chair when I first saw this question. Most feral libraries that I am acquainted with, other than the big agency libraries, are small operations with no more than a half dozen people. There are four of us here, one government librarian, one contract librarian, and two contract library technicians. We do it all.

Hi Julie,
We only have 9 staff members and we still use Technical Services for one half and Public Services for the other half. Within Technical Services is acquisitions, cataloging, systems, and archives. Within Public Services is reference, instruction, ILL, and circulation. They both share the stacks maintenance and printing/copying troubleshooting.
Best,
Lucy

Subject: [FEDLIB] Org chart question
Hello, everyone – the days when two of the major divisions of the Library were called Technical Services and Reference are long past, and I would love to know how Federal libraries have evolved since then. Could you reply to me and let me know how your library is organized, and what names you are using for the divisions within your library? I would also be curious to know how many libraries have other divisions beyond reference and tech services, such as archives, special collections, or systems/network support.
I will be happy to gather responses and share results with the group.
In the interests of full disclosure, the State Department library has two major divisions – Information Services (reference) and Information Resources (acquisitions and cataloging).
Thanks
Julie
