Thanks John, some sort of better way seemed worth a try especially when
transferring many cassettes.

I had no problems buying replacement screws. Just standard metric threaded
screws.

Unfortunately on the Tascam 122's merely extending the screw creates
problems.

1. It fouls one of the function buttons.
2. A much longer screw risks damage because of the greater leverage/moment.
3. For one of the 122 models (MkII?) the adjuster fouls a small PCB behind
the function switches requiring a PCB mod.
4. The plastic cassette door fouls the adjuster as it opens.
5. The metal cassette door frame also fouls the adjuster.

Even with the ball and socket design, small custom machine mods were still
needed to solve 3,4 and 5.

Unfortunately especially these Tascam models were never designed with a
front panel azimuth adjuster in mind. I thought of making up kits and
selling them for user installation but most of the work would be in the
custom machine mods needed to successfully install such a kit.

Maybe others will come up with alternative designs which are easier to
install. Redesigned front panel function switch locations to accomodate an
extended screw design seems one option. Or dispense with the front panel
function controls and instead control tape functions remotely. The Tascams
and some other better quality cassette decks have remote control sockets as
standard.

It depends on the machine though. Standard classic Naks such as LX.., 48..
series can more easily take a simple extended screw with no ball joint
needed. The adjuster knob moves up and down with the head platform. But
three small mods were necessary to the door frame and door so the extended
screw will clear those parts. Careful drilling/ filing but tedious. The Nak
head platform and parts, some of which are plastic, seems delicate at the
best of times so some care is needed in use.

Here's a pic of a Nak LX3 azimuth adjuster.

Tim, that is really a dandy mod. Azimuth adjustment is sooo critical on
cassettes, yet hard to adjust on the Tascam machine, a popular workhouse
pro cassette machine. I adjust my 122 MkIII with a very small Philips head
screwdriver, but it is no fun getting to the screw, and I worry about the
screw head becoming "carved out" as so many Philips-head screws do over
time. Doing the adjustment gets very delicate. Can one even find
replacement screws? One with a long shank sticking out that you could turn
by hand might be an easy mod?

Thanks,
John Haley
