Southern Folklife Collection Audiovisual Research Fellowship:

The Southern Folklife Collection (SFC) is pleased to announce the /SFC
Audiovisual Research Fellowship/. Created through support from The
Andrew W. Mellon Foundation, the Fellowship program seeks to encourage
scholarly use of the the Southern Folklife Collection’s rich audiovisual
collections.

We invite proposals in the areas of the SFC’s collection strengths:
American vernacular music and Folklore. Information about the SFC’s
holdings is available at: www.library.unc.edu/wilson/sfc/collections
<http://www.library.unc.edu/wilson/sfc/collections> The SFC is
especially rich in documentation of the early commercial development of
country music and the folk revival movement of the 1960s. We are
particularly interested in innovative use of digitized audio and
audiovisual recordings and/or metadata from SFC collections.

A stipend of $2,500 will support travel and lodging for a one-week
residency in Chapel Hill. The Research Fellowship provides an
opportunity to work closely with the Curator of the Southern Folklife
Collection and SFC staff to define a universe of audiovisual materials
that would be most useful for the Fellow’s research. The SFC will
allocate studio time or funds for outsourcing to fulfill requests for
digitization and online access of audiovisual materials not currently
accessible online. Those requests will be limited to thirty audio or
video recordings and will be available within three months following the
research visit in Chapel Hill. Travel to the Southern Folklife
Collection must be completed before June 15, 2018.

      Eligibility and Requirements:

Faculty, graduate students, and independent scholars who plan to use the
AV resources <http://library.unc.edu/wilson/sfc/collections/> available
in the Southern Folklife Collection are eligible. Preference will be
given to applicants residing outside central North Carolina.

Foreign nationals must independently obtain a social security number and
a visa before grant funds can be issued to them.

Each award recipient must make a one-week in-person research visit to
the SFC before June 15, 2018.

At the conclusion of their research visit, the Fellow is required to
give a 30-minute public presentation in the Library and to provide
feedback to collection staff on how outreach and access of the
collections can be improved, with focus on potential future uses of the
materials by researchers.

      Application:

To apply, submit:

 1. Curriculum vitae (maximum two pages)

 2. Narrative (maximum 500 words):

  * A description of your project’s anticipated use of the Southern
Folklife Collection. _Please discuss specific SFC collections and
    their relevance to your project._

  * A description of the anticipated research outcomes and audiences
(e.g., print publications, audio or audiovisual publication,
exhibition, public event, teaching, web-based resources).

 3. Letter of recommendation from a professional colleague familiar with
the applicant’s work. For graduate degree candidates, the
recommendation must be from the professor directing the applicant’s
research. Applicants are responsible for contacting and obtaining
    letters from those providing recommendations.
