Thanks for the tip about the door window! I was afraid to apply too much pressure lest something break. Ended up popping right off by steadily pushing/pulling on the window.
Unfortch using Eye-Tees and alcohol doesn't seem to have helped one way or the other. Not much gunk was visible on the sticks after cleaning. There is a constant whine or hiss coming from around the take-up and supply pulleys, especially the former. Would trying to use something like DeOxit be of any use? Sometimes FFing and then REWing a tape results in the REW moving along faster - I wonder if this provides a clue...
