Much of GRV's life/bio was derived from what he himself created, from a
fictional father to his claim that he was born in the US. His real father was
Solomon Fingerhut, an erstwhile piano teacher whose exploits made the NYT
in 1896.
The previous-known life of GRV has little to do with history and/or
accuracy, despite its frequent repetitions.
My article on his life and bio (with much needed new data, from orig
sources) appeared in Dec 2014 in AP.
