Agreed.
It struck me that some were confusing "identity" with "biography."
By "identity," don't we mean "bibliographic identity"? Not "know everything you care to know about an entity."

Hello, all
I agree wholeheartedly with Richard. The function of the 670 field is clearly laid out in Z1, and this definition would tend to preclude the kind of data included in two of the fields added to the Trump AR. I am less certain about the 678, which is designated in Z! as a field for "Biographical or historical data" designed to be available for public display. I think this allows for the application of cataloger judgment as to what--and what is not--pertinent about the entity represented by the record and what is--and is not--appropriate to display to our public(s). It would be unfortunate if authority records take on the character of contested territory, but I suppose this is the risk we run in a democratic society, which can be contentious even when the agents involved are music catalogers. Further, I think we all are aware that there is no such animal as complete "neutrality" and that defense of same can mask an underlying desire to protect the status quo. Nevertheless, it makes sense to keep a close eye on what exactly an authority record exists to do.
I would like to thank Chuck Herrold for raising this issue. We surely will face this sort of situation more and more frequently as we migrate toward linked data (or as some like to say, the "linked data environment").
With best regards,
Phyllis Jones

You are correct. Quoting DCM:Z1 on the 670 field:
“The purpose of this field is to record information about the name or title represented in the 1XX field. It includes facts that contribute to the identification of the entity, that justify the choice of the name or title, and any additional elements used to construct the authorized access point (1XX). The information also justifies, as needed, variant forms of the name or title (4XX), other identifying elements (046 and 3XX), and clarifies relationships between the 1XX and other entities in the file.”
The entry then lists in more detail the functions of the 670 field, all of which are to do with recording information to support the choice of name, enabling identification, recording relationships and fields of writing, and facilitating database maintenance, and none of which are concerned with documenting all the details of a person’s life or calling them to account for their misdemeanours.
We are not creating biographies:
“It is not necessary to include a 670 field for every reference source consulted; use judgment in deciding what sources are important enough to retain in the permanent authority record. For example, an NAR does not serve as a biographical sketch of a person, nor as an account of the detailed history of a corporate body.”
In omitting detailed biographical information, especially contentious statements, we are not condoning or endorsing anything that a person is said to have done. We are merely conforming to NACO requirements as to the content and purpose of a name authority record.
Regards
Richard

Agreed. I hope they have been removed. These allegations have been widely covered and don’t belong in the record. This is the journalist or biographer’s job, not ours.

I have to weigh in on this, as well.
It adds to nothing and I also think it ought to be removed.
Allison
The last three 670s contain no information justifying data in the NAR, nor any name variants, nor any information needed to identify the person. I agree they are inappropriate; they are also unnecessary, and in my opinion ought to be removed.

Richard

Dear colleagues:
While I have no respect whatsoever for the person currently holding the office, is such non-objective information what we really want in our authority records?:

678 Donald Trump (born 1946) is a U.S. real estate developer, billionaire, television personality, political candidate, and author. Trump has been accused of sexual assault and sexual harassment, including non-consensual kissing or groping, by at least fifteen women since the 1980s.
Following that perverse logic, I would expect such additions as: 372 Sexual harassment of women $2 lcsh
Seriously, I try to exclude all judgmental characterizations—positive or negative—from my authority work, and I believe others should do so as well. IMO, whoever added the data in bold-face ought to remove it. It just adds fuel to an already out-of-control conflagration.
Thanks,
Chuck Herrold
