You're not too far off, since many students are paying to do these
jobs/internships. Students in many institutions that require an internship
for graduation have to pay for those credit hours, so they *are *paying to
work, rather than working for pay. This can be a hardship for students who
can't afford to pay to take an internship without reimbursement, or who are
unable to take on an internship as well as work a paid position along with
other coursework. Let alone if that internship is a distance away/not in
the area that they are attending school, meaning they'd have to pay for
travel, another rent, etc.

On the other hand, anyone who considers taking an unpaid internship for
work experience rather than graduation requirements still must be able to
devote time and money (such as travel expenses) to a position that will not
pay their bills, which isn't an option for someone who doesn't have the
money up-front to work for free.
