Dunno about the tapes. They went out on 16" discs originally- I got some good dubs from Bermuda- and they were repackaged for the US and probably the other colonies as well. WBAI used to carry them.

Effin' BBC over-recorded their The Goodies masters just to save money. (The Goodies were as funny as any of those TV troupes.) The same thing nearly happened to Monty Python and Benny Hill tapes. But somehow, in the nick of time. . .
One must wonder whether the Goon Show radio tapes survive.
