ADDITION:
  I believe that the NY Tower east village store was largely responsible for the demise of a great record store: Discophile on 8th street. The owner later worked at the east 80's German specialty store's record department, later had a mail order business....
  In its heyday, Tower had an immense stock wide and deep, but in it's decline the bins were thinly stocked. The employees included some extremely knowledgeable people, and certain stores had areas of specialization - for instance the NY east village store had a remarkable collection of classical vocal and instrumental music including imports from Japan which were not in other branches. The Broadway store, as might be expected, full coverage of theater and nostalgia.

I still have a flyer regarding the MGM reissues. It was printed by the Record Hunter [Masterpieces in the Mail} and sent to me...postmark 13 March 1963.

As far as I know, the rights are owned by Universal Music. I had, at one time, thought about reissuing them, but then I thought about the costs. I have a terrible sounding interview with Hovhaness who mentioned that he had to re record things since the master tapes of the MGM issues could not be found. Yet, I have heard that the master tapes, at least of the stuff that was not licensed by MGM are in a warehouse in Germany. I have had no verification on this. I do have decent copies of the discs of the non licensed material...and some of the licensed stuff. I believe all of the non-licensed, and perhaps the licensed material, should be PD outside the US. I think Naxos transferred (using people like Lani Spahr) some of the discs and they can be heard at non-US urls, via the Naxos Music Library.
