"Murke's Collected Silences" by Heinrich Boell features a beleagured
radio producer who strings together recorded silences from tape in the
waste bin, having had to substitute the word "God" with some ridiculous
circumlocution in a radio talk on the instructions of the speaker.
Published in 1955 - maybe the first mention of tape editing in fiction?
