Hi, Tommy,
I have heard of external enclosures for expansion cards and this is
perhaps the most interesting thing I quickly found.

I'm Windows (10 now, 7 then) based and in 2011, I bought a computer
because it was cheaper to buy a new computer with two PCI slots than to
buy the RME PCIe adapter cards for the Multiface II (of which I have
two). It is my multitrack ingest PC and I use it still today, though the
new studio machine can use its new RME Fireface UFX II coupled with the
older Fireface UFX for 16 tracks as well.
Cheers,
Richard
