Ah…so her name IS pronounced Spee-vee.
And the article discusses her role in the film, Hallelujah, which I highly recommend seeing for its inclusion of “authentic” black folk church services, including Rev. A. W. Nix’s sermon, “Black Diamond Express to Hell.” In addition, the Dixie Jubilee Singers and Curtis Mosby’s band, the Blue Blowers, were featured.
I’m surprised she was upset with Blind Lemon Jefferson for using her “Black Snake” theme, because musical and lyrical borrowing was standard procedure back then.
Great article - thank you for sharing Steve!
