PS - Richard's earlier suggestion about winding 10 -15 turns of paper leader on slotted hubs is a good one. I've done the same thing myself, and I see no problems down the road.

We've got some 3M 100 paper tape in our archive from the late 1940s. That tape came on 7-inch reels with very large slots - 1/4 inch or so - but small diameter hubs. I've moved all of that tape to 10 1/2-inch slotless reels. The large hub on a 10 1/2 inch reel greatly decreases the stress on the tape when you get to the end of the reel, compared to the very small hub on the original. Fortunately, the large slots don't leave any permanent creases in the paper tape. Believe it or not, 3M also used those large slots on some early 111 acetate tape. Those have permanent creases. Fortunately, in this case, the tapes were stored head out, so the music ends before the creases appear.

Best,
Gary

Hi, Stewart,

$8.50 for 100 feet? Are they certain that's not 1000 feet? The box could
be any size, but normally it comes in a 7-inch box and that would hold
1000 feet. I'm glad I bought some (I don't want to sell any) a decade
and a half ago.

I left the owner a voice mail message.

Cheers,

Richard
