Thanks Paul.

A colleague here at LOC pointed out to me that during the period in question, Billboard and Cashbox were copyrighted seven days in advance of their cover dates. Billboard's charts were stated to be for the week ending two days earlier, so for the July 1st, 1957 issue, the charts were actually for the week ending June 22nd. Cashbox didn't date it's charts in this way, but I figure that their lead times were probably very close to Billboard's, if not the same.

For me, it says that the news in either one was at least seven days older than the date on the cover, though both magazines were probably available at least two days earlier than that.

I've seen cover dates of monthly magazines on newstands at least a month in advance of the cover date. And I've received Wired, for example, almost a month in advance.

I believe one would need to talk with someone who knows about the calendar inside the publisher's to determine the date of delivery.

If this is a copyright question, back then it had to do with when it was available to the public and if it was copyrighted. Now it is copyrighted as soon as it is created in hardcopy or on a hard drive. So knowing the former would be important for something written back then.
