If you're not actually getting all the speed you're paying for, it makes sense to move to newer equipment. It's easy to test this with e.g. Speedtest.net (via Ethernet from your router, not WiFi). Even if you are getting all the speed you're paying for, or it seems like it, a newer modem may be beneficial in terms of relieving network congestion, both for you and for others. (Long term, it'll also enable higher speed tiers.)

They occasionally tell me that my modem is old and I’m not getting the speed I should be getting, but like your scenario, I don’t trust what Comcast says. It’s working extremely fast, so why change? Every 6 months, give or take a month, the time stamp on the TV service goes kooky and I chat with them to reset my cable box. They resist. I persist. And all goes right again.

I think cable is better, but my office wasn’t wired for cable and ATT rewired me for free as they desperately wanted the business.
