I'm sorry to hear about Stewart's experience with a rude member. Fortunately, such incidents seem to be few and far between on this listserve. 

Although I've been an ARSC member since the early 1980s, I've only been on this listserve for a little over two years. During that time I've found the group to be polite, friendly, freely willing to share helpful information, and very collegial when expressing opinions that differ from others. I gather that social media is often not like this which, in addition to the security concerns, is the reason I stay away from them. I know that those of us who regularly contribute to this list will continue to make this a forum we can be proud of.

Well, I’m no shrinking violet, and I’ve been around the block, but I remember distinctly being verbally attacked for a remark I made soon after joining this august list by one of the senior members. And after defending myself, that person backed down but never apologized.

That being said, I have found this group to be exceedingly well behaved and to offer incredible amounts of information both to the professional as well as the just curious (as I am.)

I’m only bringing this up because there is bad behavior in any venue. Email venues, in general suffer from people who may not understand the email etiquette necessary because there is no facial underpinning the written response. But I have found that in general the behavior is far worse on social media than on email lists such as this.

I don’t join social media groups because of security issues, plain and simple. ARSC having a facebook presence doesn’t affect me because I put my account on permanent hiatus and will not reply in any venue that requires me to identify myself by a facebook account ID.
