In my experience, the only thing there is to photograh is brown goo stuck to everything in the tape path. The tape looks normal, but has a stickiness or gummy feeling to the touch and makes a squealing as it gums up the heads. It’s more of a touch thing, how it feels in the fingers.
And as it gums up the machine, you are losing oxide, so stop instantly if it starts to squeal and stick.
Baking is needed.
