Your experience parallels mine.
The tapes I have are on two different Thermionic Products branded reel
types. One reel type is made of steel and has the three large gaps in the
centre hub. Not ideal. The other is made of a kind of early plastic I guess,
with the sides held together with three aluminium rivets. Some of the reels
dont run true and as mentioned, some of the paper tapes have stuck together
especially closer to the small centre hub as the tape tensions have
increased with I guess a constant torque wind. Definitely not the ideal
reels to archive tapes on. I'm guessing some of these tapes havent been
unspooled since they were recorded in the early 50's.
Yes bad wow on some as they come towards the end of the tape pack. A bad
combination of a small diameter reel hub, fragile paper based tape, and an
original recorder with constant torque! But as Marie mentioned, the
spreading of splice adhesive has probably been the biggest problem. All
seems to be going well and then an oozing adhesive splice comes up and
things start to get interesting very quickly.
Gary, re acetate tapes, there are also in this collection some yellow boxes
labelled G.E.C. with plain aluminium reels which have very bad tape spoking.
Unspooling a couple of the tapes has released the tensions in the tapes so
that they wind onto the take up reel in a wild fashion, twisting and turning
all over the place. I have placed these acetate tapes currently in the "too
hard" basket. By comparison, the paper tapes seem easy... In comparison to
these paper and acetate tapes, later polyester seems like a walk in the
park.
I've considered using for transfer a 1/4" / 8 track repro head. On an
initial test the 4 inner tracks, 3,4,5,6, matched the Soundmirror centre
track well and would allow more wiggle room for the wilder azimuth
misalignments.
Another thought was to use a 4 track cassette repro head custom fitted to a
suitable open reel machine. Its 3.8mm overall dimensions would pretty much
match the original Soundmirror centre track which I believe is about 4mm
wide
