Hi Jennifer,

I've only visited the ARSC facebook page a couple of times. I'm not a
facebook person, but I think the page looks great. And seeing as the
page has 2,500 likes you've achieved a very nice following.

But I do appreciate all the work it takes to keep a facebook page
current and fresh and I do appreciate that if ARSC is going to attract
new members, especially younger members, social media is very important.
Thanks for all the time, effort and work you do to get our
organization's name out there in front of people who may never have
known about ARSC if it wasn't for what you're doing. Keep up the good
work!!!

Kind Regards,

John Schroth

> Hello everyone,

The position is part of the ARSC Online Media Committee, whose mission is "to maintain and develop the Association of Recorded Sound web presence, including the official ARSC website, social media platforms, listservs, and web projects." Social-media-wise, we also have a Twitter account, a YouTube channel, a Wikipedia page, and a LinkedIn account. Like many of you, I am ambivalent-leaning-towards-negative about many social media platforms, but it's a complex issue. I barely post anything personal on Facebook or Twitter, and I am fanatical about my privacy settings, but I do enjoy scouring the Internet for content I think people who are members of ARSC or who support its aims would be interested in. The vast majority of what is posted on FB and Twitter is not original content, but links to articles and reminders of deadlines, grant programs, upcoming conferences, etc. And there is also a dedicated conference page to increase awareness of that event, to welcome newcomers, and for people to exchange information about the venue and program.
> Yes, the ARSC FB page gets likes and comments, but its activities are certainly not narcissistic or egotistical endeavors to be popular--the aim is for ARSC to be visible, informative, and welcoming.
> It's your choice to participate or "like" or "follow"--no pressure here. And in no way does FB threaten the purpose or future of the listserv. ARSC's social media activities are essentially just good PR for us. And like it or hate it, almost every organization out there does have a social media presence.
> It's been said before, but bears repeating again, that ARSC has a Facebook page, which is more like a one-to-many broadcast channel for information; and not a Facebook group, which is more conversational, and much more difficult to moderate.
> And just FYI, Mike Biel did not post anything about his email being hacked on the ARSC Facebook page. Nor is there an unofficial ARSC FB page, just the single official one.
