I’m dubbing my set of the Rolph, not Jaap Schroder Bach Sonatas and
Partitas. Columbia ML 4643, 4744 and 4745 in set SL-189. Mono, c. 1951.
I’m having a problem at the end of the Chaconne. It is distorting. I’ve
two copies of this record and both do it. It’s the last ½”, almost no space
between the last chord and the label. I’ve used a good 12” arm, a properly
aligned SME 16” arm, 3 cartridges, two with stereo stylyi and the other with
a 1.1 mil . The song remains the same.
I suspect Columbia overcut it. I’ve no idea id=f there was a European issue
and, if so, if it exhibited the same problem.
The set is pretty pricey. I thought there might be a comment about it on
the net but so far, nada.
Otherwise, the sound is excellent mono (Bob Fine recorded it, according to
the notes. These are very compelling, intense performances. But that
blurred sound during the complex passages at the end is a puzzlement.
Single notes during this section sound ok. Anyone with experience playing
rather than only collecting this set, this movement?
