Hi Howard,
Nice to hear from you. I hope you are doing well.
My copies of 95203 and 10008 do not have an S/8, but John Bolig's Victor Red Seal discography notes that an S/8 dubbing was made on June 7, 1915. He only notes that an S/8 was made on that date of matrix number C-8545-4 (the issued take); he doesn't give any catalog numbers for a release of that dub. So, it's possible that a dub was made, but not used.
For other S/8 dubbings, John does indicate catalog number(s), if those dubbings were released. For example, Di quella pira from Trovatore, made on Feb. 11, 1906, was dubbed in 1915, and John notes that copies of the original single-faced 87001 and double-faced 512 were issued in dubbings bearing the S/8 mark. So, I would definitely interpret all this to mean that the Faust side was dubbed, but that the dubbing was never used. Why it was dubbed may forever remain a mystery. As you can see for yourself, there are no physical anomalies - such as too long or too short a run-in space - that would explain it. My original pressing of Di quella pira has an unusually wide run-in space, which was corrected in the dubbing.
I hope this helps.
I began phasing myself into retirement in Nov. 2010, and worked half-time until June 2014. At that point I went into full retirement mode, as did my wife that same year. We are both enjoying retirement immensely. I still do volunteer work in the Crane Recording Archive, and give presentations to alums ever year on historical Crane recordings that I've transferred. But, it's what I want to do, when I want to do it. I'm still very busy with writing and conference presentations. I even have time to listen to my recordings!
Are you retired? If so, I hope you are enjoying yours.
Best,
Gary

Subject: [EXTERNAL] [ARSCLIST] Double face Victors and S/8
I should know this, but, obviously, I don't.
W.R. Moran, in his discography of Caruso published in Enrico Caruso,
My Father and My Family, notes that Victor 95203 and 10008 (final trio
from Faust) were pressed from dubbed matrices after a certain point.
My copy of 10008 does not show S/8 for the Faust trio. So for double
face issues did Victor manage to squeeze a few more pressings from the
original matrix, or did they just use the S/8 dubbing without marking
it as such? The DAHC entry for this
(https://adp.library.ucsb.edu/index.php/matrix/detail/200008626/C-8545-Prison_scene_part_III) makes no mention of it ever being an
S/8.
Thanks.
