Oh..BTW....

Speaking of distorted sides....being a Gordon MacRae fan I ran across a lovely, albeit quite grainy, copy of one of his Apollo discs several years ago (the titles escape me at the moment) and was disappointed to find that one of the sides was horribly overdriven and distorted while the other was in rather decent sound. Makes you wonder....Hmmmm..... Not the first time this sort of thing has happened.

I have no experience with Durbin's Decca 78s; however, in addition to the other observations on this topic, it is well to remember that American Decca mastered on lacquer blanks using vertical cut and then dubbed approved cuts to 78rpm lateral for production, in the same manner as American Columbia. Wartime exigencies might have allowed some defective cuts to escape the qc process.
