Hi Kevin,
Yes it's important to only play such tapes on a known to be well maintained
deck as the DAT tapes are thin and fragile, and can easily be damaged in a
faulty player. A skilled technician who still services older tape based
camcorders may be worth trying as there are a lot of similarities between
smaller camcorder tape formats and the DAT format.
